Are All Things Equal?
Income and Wealth Disparities by Race in the United States
Historical discrimination and injustices faced by communities of color have led to major differences in intergenerational wealth. Redlining, unequal public education, and employment discrimination have compounded over time leaving communities of color in worse-off positions regarding educational outcomes, employment opportunities, and wealth attainment. Racial wealth gaps are growing, and racial income gaps have stagnated. Addressing these inequities calls for a combined effort from local, state, and federal governments. Wealth building opportunities are vital in order to advance the futures of Black Americans and their families for generations to come.
This paper aims to describe the wealth and income inequities faced by people of color, where these inequities originated from, and policy recommendations that can help to mitigate these issues going forward.
